Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23, 2026, but Xbox Game Pass subscribers won't be getting it on day one. Activision has confirmed that the new entry will launch as a standalone purchase, with Game Pass availability pushed back to Holiday 2027.

The October 15 official announcement clears up one of the biggest questions surrounding the release. Meanwhile, players who digitally pre-ordered the game can already jump into its campaign ahead of launch.

Modern Warfare 4 Won't Be on Game Pass at Launch

Unlike recent Call of Duty releases, Modern Warfare 4 won't be included with Game Pass Ultimate on release day. Anyone hoping to play at launch will need to buy a copy.

Activision says the game is expected to join Game Pass during Holiday 2027, although an exact date hasn't been announced.

Existing subscribers aren't losing access to everything Call of Duty, though. Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III will remain available through Game Pass Ultimate.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions from players. Some are frustrated about paying full price despite already having a subscription, while others aren't surprised by the change, which Xbox had signaled earlier this year.

Modern Warfare 4 Release Schedule and Early Access

The full release is still a few days away, but digital pre-order customers get a head start.

The complete 16-mission campaign is already playable for eligible digital buyers. Both the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition qualify for early access.

The full game is scheduled to unlock at midnight local time on October 23.

What's New in Modern Warfare 4?

Modern Warfare 4 continues the rebooted Modern Warfare storyline, this time centered on a full-scale invasion of the Korean Peninsula.

Players follow South Korean soldier Private Park as he fights on the front lines, while Captain Price pursues a separate mission that eventually connects to the wider conflict. The campaign takes players from Korea to New York, Paris, and Mumbai.

Outside the campaign, Multiplayer launches with 12 new 6v6 maps, alongside Gunfight and larger battles featuring vehicles.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 DMZ extraction mode

The fan-favorite DMZ extraction mode is also returning, bringing players to the new Hajin map for a mix of looting, combat, objectives, and risky escapes.

Modern Warfare 4 also marks the franchise's arrival on Nintendo Switch 2. It won't be available on PS4 or Xbox One.

Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

The Standard Edition costs $69.99, while the $99.99 Vault Edition includes additional Operator packs, special weapons, a season of BlackCell, and a DMZ bonus.

Digital pre-orders also come with the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, Gilded Pearl Camo Pack, and Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint.

For Xbox players, that blueprint gets a special green appearance celebrating Xbox's 25th anniversary.

Editor's Comment

Skipping Game Pass is a pretty big change for a series that many Xbox subscribers have gotten used to playing at launch.

But with the campaign already available and DMZ returning, there's still plenty to look forward to. The bigger question is whether Modern Warfare 4 delivers enough to convince players it's worth buying at full price.
